(Known in China as ‘Tazhuang Ginkgo’) Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken' is a male form. Following a tip provided by Mr. P. Theunissen of Beesel, in The Netherlands, Piet Vergeld saw a Witch’s broom in 1995 growing on a tree in Kronenburger Park in the City of Nijmegen, in The Netherlands. It was a large and loose mutation. He harvested some material and grafted it. The plant was named ‘Mariken’ after Mariken van Nieumegen, a famous female from medieval literature. David Bomer, of Boomkwekerij David Bömer, Vagevuurstraat 6A, 4882 NK Zundert, Netherlands claims that it was introduced into the trade by his nursery. Regardless of whom introduced the plant, it is a good cultivar with stable characteristics that has become a firm favourite.

DescriptionGinkgo biloba 'Mariken' is an exceptional cultivar with a broad spreading habit which can be seen  top worked as a small tree or commonly as a bushy shrub. The foliage appears rounded and cupped. The annual growth rate is 15 cm. A mature plant will be in the regions of 1 m high with a spread of 2.5 m.
