This is a female cultivar which originated from China before 2007 (Known in China as Ginkgo biloba ‘Dōngfāng Zhī Xīng’). As a fruiting cultivar it is grown specifically because it reliably produces extensive crops of fruit which contain, thin shelled nuts. 

 

Description - Ginkgo biloba ‘Eastern Star’ has narrow and deeply slotted leaves. The growth rate (under nursery conditions) is 20cm - 30 cm a year. Some sources suggest that will grow to 4m in height, others 10m in height, regardless expect it to grow to a height of 2.5m in 10 years. It is worth noting that this cultivar will start to bear fruit after just 4 to 5 years.
