This is a striking new cultivar that originated from the United States of America. It is a sport that occurred on a plant of Ginkgo biloba ‘Saratoga’ sometime shortly before 2003. Listed on the International Plant names as Ginkgo biloba ‘Californian Sunset’. However, most sources including the Royal Horticultural Society accept the name without the addition of an ‘n’ on California. The person who discovered it and how it came into the trade are no known.
Description - Ginkgo biloba ‘California Sunset’. The fan shaped leaves emerge as a pale creamy-yellow in colour, turning dark green with clear golden stripes as they age in summer. Regrettably it does have a habit of reverting to in part to Green and it is advisable to remove branches that have fully reverted. It maintains a leader (if permitted) and is expected to grow to a height in excess of 4m with a spread of 3 - 4m.
